Lapidary of Enlightenment

Shining light through the earth beneath our feet.

  • In this year of downsizing, my employer chose to pay the cost of ignorance versus the cost of salary. I am choosing to enjoy what I have for my whole life – the beauty of rocks and minerals.

This is also a year of misinformation. I am choosing to counter that with real information. There is an organization that manages mineral names, but no real control over the trade names and misnomers that dealers concoct. I spent 30+ years using my computer science/math/business degree to manage data and make it usable and comprehensible to users. The majority of that time had focus on classification and governance of that data. What my CS degree does not reflect is more than a year’s worth of other courses to make college bearable. What was extra then is useful now: geology, geography, physics, chemistry, meteorology, drafting and all of the summers in manufacturing.

So, in this new life let us see what can be done with a few dozen lapidary saws, wheels, and tumblers. As I was thrown to retirement early it will be a work in progress, but hopefully this will be somethings others can enjoy.
